Reaching Minority Ethnic Youth
Presumed to be a minority habit, our community led research concluded that waterpipe smoking is on the verge of a huge surge in popularity driven by the commercial opportunity it affords merchants. Awareness of associated health implications was set as the behavioural goal of an intervention which focused on exploding the myths supported by the shisha industry around its safety. Interventions at school enrichment days, colleges, youth group workshops and a forum based website were used to create awareness through face-to-face discussions. It was a first and we discovered in excess of 50% of the youth audience had tried it with over 80% not believing it to be a significant risk to health. They do now!
